Keeping classes safe

Pipkin classes are for a school class and its teacher. Children can't send messages, chat, comment, share pictures or type anything other children see. The only words in a class that people type are the class name, the teacher's name and the school's name, all typed by the teacher. Each child shows up as a made-up nickname and an animal, never their real name.

Checks before anything is shown

Every class name, teacher name and school name is checked before it is saved. We refuse it if it has a word on our lists of words we don't allow, a link, an email address or a phone number. This check is automatic: it compares the words with the lists and nothing else.

Nobody joins a class until the teacher lets them in. Each child stays off the class board unless they choose "Show me".

What is never allowed

These rules are the same for every age, Reception to Year 6.

If something is wrong

Children: tap "Something not right?" on your class page, or tell your teacher or a grown-up you trust.

Grown-ups and teachers: use "Report a problem" in Settings › Class or in the teacher pages, or email safety@hellopipkin.com.

We look at every report within one school day. We take down anything illegal or against these rules straight away, and replace a name with a plain label. If we think a child may be at risk, we tell the school, and the police where needed.

If you disagree

If you disagree with something we removed, or a name our check refused, email us and a person will look again within 5 working days. Complaints about how we handle safety go to the same address. We reply within 10 working days.

Ages

Pipkin is made for children aged 4 to 11. We don't use age checks: a grown-up joins each child to a class, and the teacher lets them in.
